The conversion process, step by step NEW

From design file to WordPress page: the same five steps for ZIP/HTML, Figma, Penpot and Adobe XD, and what changes between Free and paid accounts.

Whatever you start from — a ZIP with HTML, a Figma file, a Penpot export or an Adobe XD file — a conversion always follows the same five steps. What changes is how you prepare the source and what you can do with the result, which depends on your plan.

The five steps

  1. Prepare the design. Get the source ready in its own tool (a ZIP with your pages, a Figma link, a JSON export, an .xd file). Each source has its own guide, linked below.
  2. Create a project. In the app, click New project, choose the source tab, give the project a name and click Create project. Tapeto reads the file and the project goes from pending to parsing to parsed. Every project you create counts against your monthly limit.
  3. Choose a builder and convert. Open the project, pick a builder (Gutenberg on every plan, Elementor from Starter) and click Convert. The conversion goes from queued to processing to completed. You can run more conversions on the same project — for example one per builder — without creating a new project.
  4. Review the result. On the conversion page, check the Preview, Content, Header / Footer / Sidebar and Instructions tabs, and the Fidelity Score: a 0–100 estimate of how close the output is to your design.
  5. Get it into WordPress. How you do this depends on your plan: copy or download the files and import them by hand (Free), or export a WXR file / publish straight to a connected site (Starter and up).

Which source can I use?

Source What you give Tapeto Plans Step-by-step guide
ZIP / HTML A .zip with .html, .css, images (or a single .html) — max 5–200 MB (by plan) All Convert a ZIP / HTML
Figma The file or frame link plus a personal access token, or the JSON exported from Figma — max 5–200 MB (by plan) All Convert from Figma
Penpot The JSON export of the Penpot file — max 5–200 MB (by plan) Pro and up Convert from Penpot
Adobe XD The .xd file — max 5–200 MB (by plan) Pro and up Convert from Adobe XD

You can also import a GitHub repository (public or private) from the GitHub tab; it follows the same flow as a ZIP.

Getting the result: Free vs paid

Free account

You get the converted content as files you import yourself:

  1. On the conversion page, use Copy on the Content tab (and on the Header / Footer / Sidebar tab if your design has those parts). Downloading files starts on Starter.
  2. Follow the Instructions tab — it shows the exact import steps for your builder. For Gutenberg: create a page in WordPress, open the Code editor and paste the content.
  3. Copy the CSS of your original design into Appearance → Customize → Additional CSS.

Starter, Pro, Agency and Studio

On top of downloading, you can:

  1. Export WXR — a standard WordPress file you import from Tools → Import, with pages, menus and header / footer. No plugin needed on the site.
  2. Publish to WordPress — install the Tapeto plugin, add the site under WP Connections and publish with one click. Pages are created as drafts, images go to the Media Library and links between pages are rewritten. See Connecting WordPress.
  3. On Agency and Studio, the WXR also includes custom post types and loops (blog, portfolio, testimonials…) detected in your design.
